27
On October 27, 1922, Michel Galabru was born in Safi, Morocco. With his distinctive gravelly voice, expressive face and powerful comic presence, he would become a familiar figure in French cinema. Yet his long career also revealed a serious dramatic talent, rooted in years of theatrical training and performance.
From Classical Theatre to Popular Cinema
Galabru trained at the Paris Conservatoire and joined the Comédie-Française in 1950. During seven years with the company, he performed works from the classical repertoire, developing the stagecraft that would support his later career.
After leaving in 1957, he continued working in theatre while building his screen presence. His appearance in La Guerre des boutons in 1962 helped introduce him to a wider cinema audience. Greater recognition followed two years later with a comedy that became the beginning of a much-loved film series.
The Familiar Face of Adjudant Gerber
In Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez (1964), Galabru played Adjudant Gerber alongside Louis de Funès. His character’s authority provided a comic counterpoint to the frantic behaviour of de Funès’s Cruchot.
Galabru returned for the film’s five sequels, making Gerber one of his most recognisable roles. His wider comedy career included films such as Le Viager and La Cage aux folles, demonstrating his ability to make supporting characters distinctive and memorable.
A Dramatic Talent Beyond Comedy
Bertrand Tavernier’s Le Juge et l’Assassin (1976) gave Galabru a markedly different role. His performance as Joseph Bouvier earned him the César Award for Best Actor in 1977, confirming a range that audiences familiar mainly with his comedies might not have expected.
Theatre remained central to his life, and he also worked as a stage director and theatre manager. Galabru died in Paris on January 4, 2016, aged 93. His legacy spans popular entertainment, classical theatre and demanding dramatic roles, reflecting a performer whose abilities reached well beyond any single character.
