On October 23, 1940, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known around the world as Pelé, was born in Três Corações, Brazil. His extraordinary skill, imagination and enthusiasm would make him one of football’s most celebrated players and turn his name into a symbol of the sport itself.

A Teenage Star on the World Stage

Pelé joined Santos FC at the age of fifteen. Within a few years, his talent had carried him from Brazilian club football to the biggest international stage. At the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, he was just seventeen when he helped Brazil win its first world title.

His performances combined exceptional close control with speed, inventive movement and a remarkable instinct for scoring. For audiences discovering the young Brazilian, football seemed to offer new possibilities whenever the ball reached his feet. The teenager soon became known as O Rei — “The King.”

Three World Cup Triumphs

Brazil retained the World Cup in 1962, although an injury prevented Pelé from playing through most of the tournament. Eight years later, he returned to the centre of the story in Mexico, helping an outstanding Brazilian team win the 1970 World Cup.

Those victories made Pelé the first player to win three men’s World Cup titles. His contribution went beyond goals: his vision and passing helped bring out the best in his teammates, making him both a brilliant individual performer and a creative force within the team.

A Name That Travelled Beyond Football

Through his years with Santos and later the New York Cosmos, Pelé introduced new audiences to the excitement of football. His appeal crossed languages and national borders, reaching people who rarely followed the sport.

His birthday celebrates a player whose lasting influence rests on more than trophies. Pelé helped make football a shared global spectacle, remembered as much for the joy of his play as for the records he established.
