On October 21, 2007, Finnish racing driver Kimi Räikkönen won the Brazilian Grand Prix for Ferrari and secured the Formula One Drivers’ World Championship. A tense afternoon at Interlagos in São Paulo transformed a three-way title contest into a remarkable triumph decided by just one point.

Three Drivers, One Final Opportunity

Räikkönen arrived at the season’s final race third in the championship standings. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton led with 107 points, followed by teammate Fernando Alonso on 103 and Räikkönen on 100. With ten points available for victory, the Ferrari driver needed a strong result and favourable outcomes elsewhere.

The situation changed dramatically during the race. Hamilton lost ground on the opening lap and then suffered a gearbox problem. Although he recovered to finish seventh, his championship advantage had slipped away.

A Ferrari One-Two at Interlagos

Räikkönen completed the 71-lap race in 1 hour, 28 minutes and 15.270 seconds. His Ferrari teammate, Brazilian driver Felipe Massa, finished second, just 1.493 seconds behind him, giving the team a decisive one-two result.

Alonso took third place for McLaren, while Hamilton’s seventh position earned him two points. Those finishing positions produced an extraordinary final calculation: Räikkönen had 110 points, Hamilton 109 and Alonso 109. The driver who had begun the day behind both rivals emerged as world champion.

A Championship Turned Around

Räikkönen had overcome a seventeen-point deficit to Hamilton across the final two races of the season. His Brazilian victory completed that recovery and delivered his first Formula One world title.

The result remains a striking example of how a championship can change in its closing stages. At Interlagos, every finishing position mattered: after an entire season of racing, a single point separated Räikkönen from both of his closest challengers.
