On December 31, 1879, German inventor Carl Benz achieved an important breakthrough: his first stationary, single-cylinder two-stroke engine ran successfully. The New Year’s Eve achievement marked a significant step towards his ambition of building a practical vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine.

A Breakthrough After Persistent Experimentation

Benz had been working intensively on his two-stroke engine since 1878. Developing a machine that could run satisfactorily required repeated experiments and improvements.

The successful test at the end of 1879 rewarded that effort. It was a milestone in engine development, although the machine itself was intended for stationary use rather than for installation in a road vehicle.

From Stationary Power to a Moving Vehicle

The engine’s commercial success gave Benz greater freedom to pursue his larger ambition. Selling engines helped support the development of a lightweight motor vehicle in which the engine and chassis would be designed to work together.

This distinction matters: the two-stroke engine of 1879 was an important foundation for his work, but it was not the engine used in his later three-wheeled automobile.

A Different Engine for the Road

The vehicle Benz completed in 1885 used a compact, single-cylinder four-stroke engine mounted at the rear. Its design combined three wire-spoked wheels with a tubular steel frame and an integrated drive system.

These features represented a further stage of invention. Building an automobile required much more than making an engine run: its power had to be transmitted and controlled within a workable vehicle.

A New Year’s Eve Worth Remembering

The successful engine test of December 31, 1879, deserves recognition as a turning point in Benz’s career. It connected years of experimentation with a commercially useful machine and helped create the opportunity for his automotive work.

The road towards the automobile began with many separate problems. That evening, Benz had solved one of the most important.
