On November 5, 2007, Google and its partners announced Android, a software platform designed to bring a more open approach to mobile devices. The announcement also introduced the Open Handset Alliance, a group of 34 companies working together on the project. Its founding members included HTC, Motorola, Qualcomm and T-Mobile.
A Platform for Many Manufacturers
Android was conceived as more than an operating system. It combined the software needed to run a mobile device with a user interface and applications. The intention was to provide a shared foundation that manufacturers and mobile operators could adapt for their own products.
The alliance planned to make the platform available under an open-source licence. This would allow companies to build on common technology while developing different devices and services. For application developers, Android promised tools and access to phone capabilities that could support new ideas.
From Announcement to the First Phone
The November announcement did not mark the arrival of an Android handset in shops. The project still needed development work, and the alliance initially expected the first phones to appear during the second half of 2008.
That milestone followed on September 23, 2008, when T-Mobile announced the first Android-powered phone, the G1. Google also released the Android 1.0 software development kit, giving developers the tools to create applications for the platform.
Applications at the Heart of the Idea
By the time the first handset was announced, developers had already produced more than 1,700 entries for the Android Developer Challenge. Applications were becoming a central part of the platform’s appeal, alongside web browsing, maps and email.
The significance of November 5, 2007 lies in the approach it introduced: a mobile platform intended to serve many manufacturers and invite contributions from a wider community of developers. Android’s public story began with that shared ambition.
